Iran to Unveil "National Chopper" Soon

TEHRAN (FNA)- An Iranian Army commander announced that the country is working on plans to manufacture home-made choppers, and added that the Iran-made chopper will be unveiled in the near future.

"As regards chopper manufacturing, the Defense Ministry has drawn plans to that end and they are working on them," Iranian Army Airborne Commander Colonel Houshang Yari said on Saturday.

"Choppers that we can call national(ly designed and manufactured) will come into use in the near future," Yari stated.

He further pointed out that Iran's airborne unit has been seeking self-sufficiency in supplying its needed parts, and is now able to supply the needed spare parts for its choppers.

Iran has taken wide strides in designing and manufacturing different types of light, semi-heavy and heavy weapons, military tools and equipment. Tehran launched an arms development program during the 1980-88 Iraqi imposed war on Iran to compensate for a US weapons embargo. Since 1992, Iran has produced its own tanks, armored personnel carriers, missiles and fighter planes.

Yet, Iranian officials have always stressed that the country's military and arms programs serve defensive purposes and should not be perceived as a threat to any other country. (FNA)
